Petrus Schotel was the son of the famous Dordrecht sea painter J.C. Schotel. He continued the tradition of his father in sea and river views and harbour views in a realistic-romantic style. He had a great knowledge of ship types and rigging and taught drawing at the Royal Marine Institute in Medemblik from 1830 to 1848. During his life he made many study trips to France, Belgium and Germany, where his work was highly appreciated. Teacher of G. van Emmerik and C.P. Schotel.
