In 1905-1907, Mondriaan drew and painted several compositions with one tall 'isolated tree', which are a prelude to the vertical-horizontal imagery that Mondriaan became increasingly fascinated by. In 'Farm Geinrust behind a row of trees on the Gein' he places this tall tree vertically on the left in the composition, while the partly horizontal brushwork in air and water contrasts with it.Mondrian was strongly interested in theosophy. The tall isolated tree near low bushes can also be seen as a rapprochement with heaven, the cosmos, like a high church tower near the buildings of a city.
