Mondrian's last dated naturalistic painting. Proof that he never abandoned figuration in Paris, after gradually distancing himself from the depiction of visible reality between 1895 and 1908. 'Landscape at Montmorency,' Montmorency was a popular haunt of wealthy Parisians, holds a special place in Mondrian's oeuvre as it is his last dated naturalistic painting. It was painted in 1930, a year in which he had already been concentrating for over a decade on his theory of Neoplasticism and the resulting geometric-abstract work. This painting was owned by a Belgian collector until 1952, and from that year onward, it has been in an American private collection. With the acquisition of 'Landscape at Montmorency,' Simonis & Buunk have finally brought Mondrian's last naturalistic painting to the Netherlands, another tremendous asset to our cultural heritage.
