Mondrian's last dated naturalistic painting. Proof that he never abandoned figuration in Paris, after gradually distancing himself from the depiction of visible reality between 1895 and 1908. 'Landscape at Montmorency.' Montmorency, a place where wealthy Parisians enjoyed spending time, holds a special place in Mondrian's oeuvre, as it is his last dated naturalistic painting. It was painted in 1930, a year in which he had already been concentrating for over a decade on his theory of Neoplasticism and the resulting geometric-abstract work. This painting was owned by a Belgian collector until 1952, and from that year onward, it has been in an American private collection. With the 2003 purchase of 'Landscape at Montmorency,' Simonis&Buunk brought Mondrian's last naturalistic painting back to the Netherlands, a valuable addition to our cultural heritage. Until 2021, the painting was in the possession of a Dutch collector who hung it next to Mondrian's 'The Seine,' also a late figurative work from 1930.
