Pieter Kluyver is a typically romantic painter. He was born in Amsterdam in 1816 and already exhibited in 1838 at the annual exhibition of Living Masters with finely elaborated, atmospheric summer landscapes. Kluyver also painted winter scenes, landscapes with cattle and forest scenes. The figures in this painting were painted by Cornelis Springer, who became known as a 'portraitist' of city and village views. Together with Barend Cornelis Koekkoek and Andreas Schelfhout, he is one of the most important painters of Dutch Romanticism. Collaboration between artists on a painting, in which each painter contributed from his specialty, was not uncommon until well into the 19th century.
