Austrian-born Richard Mauch moved to Munich at a young age to study at the academy. Initially he painted genre scenes in the tradition of the 'Münchner Schule'. Around 1900, his work changes after he joined the Munich Secession, a progressive movement that also included Gustav Klimt and Edvard Munch. This results in highly talked-about, symbolist works with women in the lead. In addition, Mauch also paints attractive genre scenes with couples in love and works as an illustrator for the satirical weekly 'Fliegende Blätter'.
