Rutger Hiemstra, born in Groningen, studied at the art academy in his hometown and mainly paints landscapes and still lifes. Hiemstra captures the Groningen fields with his painting box in the open air. In these en plein air painted landscapes, he often emphasizes the cloudy sky. In his still lifes, Hiemstra shows his attention to the beauty of the everyday. He paints vegetables, fruit and animals in a realistic style that often gives them the effect of a trompe-l'oeil: a banana in a lunchbox, quinces in a bowl, mushrooms and onions on a table or dead fish and birds. In his studio, Hiemstra collects all kinds of things to use, from skulls and vases to flowers and shells.
