Sara Hense (also written as Sara Henze) specialized in painting flowers, just like her famous teacher Margaretha Roosenboom. However, she introduced a greater variety: tulips, azaleas, carnations and chrysanthemums and many other flowers were depicted by her. Sara Hense's work was admired for the natural arrangement of the flowers and the beautiful colours and light. Sara Hense was born in Zeist in 1857 and lived and worked there for most of her life. She received her education abroad, from 1879 in Germany, Geneva and Oxford respectively. In the Netherlands it was still almost impossible for women to be trained as an artist.
