Sientje Mesdag-van Houten was married to the marine painter H.W. Mesdag. In 1870 - at the age of 35 - she started painting. Initially Veluwe landscapes, dune views and then still lifes. Her talent manifested itself especially in the latter genre. Her still lifes are swiftly set up in a Dutch impressionistic way, in which atmosphere and composition win over accurate elaboration of details.
