Sophie Grothe, daughter of a wealthy family in Zeist, was a student of H.W. Janssen. In 1895 she married this painter and moved to Amsterdam. Her oeuvre mainly consists of bright and colorful still lifes with exotic objects, interiors and portraits in watercolor. The still life shown here was drawn in 1902 by Queen Mother Emma or Queen Wilhelmina as a prize in the raffle of the Association for the Promotion of Visual Arts in Amsterdam.
