Theo Voorzaat

Village in France
oil on panel 7.3 x 10.5 cm

This painting was previously for sale.

Born in Rotterdam in 1938, Theo Voorzaat had various jobs – driver, postman, letter draughtsman – before he devoted himself entirely to painting from the age of thirty. He moved to Zeeland, where he moved into a studio in Dreischor, the place where he still makes his paintings. His style can be characterized as modern realism in which Voorzaat mainly paints landscapes, cities and still lifes with great detail and precision. Central to his work are contemporary buildings in disrepair, a natural process that fascinates Voorzaat. Combined with alienating elements such as large moons and a strong light effect, and futuristic elements such as metal spheres, his works sometimes feel 'fable-like'. Voorzaat has many exhibitions to his name and his work is included in the collections of the Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum in Domburg and the Town Hall Museum in Zierikzee.
