Walter Castle Keith

The windmills of Leidschendam
oil on canvas 40.6 x 50.8 cm, signed l.r.

This painting was previously for sale.

Walther Castle Keith was among the American artists who moved to the Netherlands between 1883 and 1914 to paint the picturesque lives of farmers and fishermen. In 1901 he 'discovered' the fishing village of Katwijk and was enchanted by life on the beach and the picturesque costumes of the fishermen. In addition to the departure and arrival of the fishing fleet and the fish auction on the beach, his light-flooded and colorful paintings show the quiet pace of life of the fishermen's wives. Keith also lived and worked in Amsterdam, Heeze, The Hague and Laren before returning to the United States in 1920. Museums: including Katwijks Museum.
