The German sculptor Walter Sintenis, who died relatively young, was trained at the academy of Dresden and then studied in Brussels for some time. He mainly created graceful female nudes in bronze, both monumental sculptures and small plastic. However, he gained great fame with a completely different subject: for the shipping company Woermann in Hamburg, operator of the so-called 'Woermann Line' between Northern Germany and East Africa (1885-1941), Sintenis made a large bronze statue of an African warrior in 1901 . This was drawn up for Woermann's office, the 'Afrikahaus'.
