Willem Wenckebach, uncle of the sculptor Oswald Wenckebach, was an artistic centipede. He became known as a painter for his cityscapes of Amsterdam, seascapes in the style of the Hague School and landscapes in the dunes, in Drenthe, around Heeze and near Wolfheze. He was also (around 1900) a well-known book binding designer, friends with Hendrik Petrus Berlage and Antoon Derkinderen, and he taught at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Haarlem. He also made pen drawings of old Amsterdam cityscapes that were published in the News of the Day and painted watercolours for the Verkade albums.
