Francois Flameng, son of an engraver, was praised in France for his historical paintings and the making of portraits. As a professor he taught at the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Paris. He received the highest civil title, the Legion d'Honneur, and designed the first French banknotes. During the First World War he painted and drew many true-to-nature representations of what took place on the battlefield.
