biography of Hendrik Jacobus Scholten

H.J. Scholten schilderde, aquarelleerde en etste anekdotische genrestukken, interieurs met elegante figuren en historische voorstellingen. Hij vormde zich als schilder in Amsterdam, als leerling van de destijds bekende genre- en portretschilder P.F. Greive. Zijn interieurs met figuren doen sterk denken aan die van de 17e-eeuwse schilder Pieter de Hoogh. Scholten schilderde ook voorstellingen uit de Hollandse geschiedenis, met de nadruk op de periode van de Gouden Eeuw. In 1872 werd hij conservator van de Teylers Stichting in Haarlem (het latere Teylers Museum).
