biography of Hendrikus IJkelenstam

Still lifes painted in a naturalistic style make up the main share of Hendrikus IJkelenstam's oeuvre. He also made portraits and cityscapes, and he was a gifted graphic artist. He was educated at the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid in Amsterdam and subsequently at the Rijksacademie in the capital. IJkelenstam made a number of study trips, including to France, Spain and Italy. He has been awarded several times for his work, in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Hendrikus IJkelenstam was a member of the Amsterdam artists' societies 'De Onafhankelijken', 'St. Lucas' and 'The Bridge'.
