biography of Henry Heerup

Henry Heerup was one of the Danish painters who were part of the Cobra movement between 1948 and 1951. He had taken painting and sculpture lessons at the Academy in Copenhagen (1927-1932) and was in close contact with the Danish avant-garde group 'Linien' in the 1930s. In his painting Heerup developed from a cubist expressionist mode to a rigid, imaginative symbol language, which also dominates his graphic oeuvre. Source of inspiration was the age-old Scandinavian folk art and Nordic archaeology.
