The Belgian painter Victor Gilsoul is known for his smoothly painted landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and figures. He also liked to paint night scenes and moonlight. The painter studied at the academies of Brussels and Antwerp and was taught by the marine painter Louis Artan and the impressionist Franz Courtens. Around 1900 his colours became bright and light under the influence of the emerging luminism and he began to use the impressionist technique. He paints lively, sometimes very quickly painted landscapes in places around Brussels, the Paris area and along the Loire. In addition to landscapes, Gilsoul also painted interiors, portraits and cityscapes. He also often visited the Belgian and Dutch coastal regions, where he captured harbours and beaches on canvas.
