Abraham van der Wayen Pieterszen was born in Middelburg in 1817. He worked as a furniture painter before enrolling in Middelburg's Teeken Akademie, or drawing academy. In 1837 he was given the opportunity to continue his studies at the academy in Antwerp, where he was taught by Ignatius van Regemorter, a painter of narrative genre pieces and romantic landscapes. Van der Wayen Pieterszen devoted himself to painting romantic summer and winter landscapes and lived and worked in Antwerp, Brussels and Mechelen respectively.
