Adriaan van Doorn was primarily a free visual artist and in that capacity mainly painted genre scenes; there are also portraits and some beach views by him. In addition, Van Doorn worked in the applied arts as a glass and decorative painter. He lived in his birthplace Utrecht until 1861, with the exception of the years 1855-'58, when he lived in Amsterdam. He returned to the capital in 1861 to settle here permanently. Adriaan van Doorn exhibited his paintings a number of times, including in The Hague (1859), Groningen (1858 and 1860) and Antwerp (1861).
