Adriaan Vrolijk, elder brother of the painter Jan Vrolijk, died at the age of 28, but had sufficient talent to grow into an important artist in a short time. Around 1850 he worked in Schelfhout's studio, together with Johannes Gijsbert Vogel and Jan Bedijs Tom. From that time on, Vrolijk regularly exhibited at the Living Masters exhibitions. Schelfhout's lessons resulted in some remarkable panoramic landscapes, both icescapes and summer landscapes. Vrolijk lived and worked in The Hague all his life.
