Elephant Baby Orje from the Berlin Zoo (posthumous execution)
bronze 16.3 x 15.6 cm, signed on the base

This sculpture was previously for sale.

Provenance: part. bezit Duitsland.

The German sculptor Alfred Sachs studied in Karlsruhe and Dresden. In the 1930s he was the 'meisterschuler' of the then very famous sculptor Arno Breker. His oeuvre includes nudes, figure groups, portrait busts and animals. Because of his sympathies during the war, his sculptures were less popular after 1945, but his qualities as a sculptor led to a renewed appreciation for his work. Baby elephant Orje was born on April 8, 1936 in the Berlin Zoo and was such a big attraction that postcards of him and his mother Aida were sold.
