The painter and illustrator Alfred Schönian began his art training in Leipzig, with the sculptor Anton Melchoir zur Strassen. He then studied at the Munich Academy, where he was taught by, among others, the history and portrait painter Gyula Benczur and Johann Leonard Raab, a painter of genre scenes, landscapes and religious scenes. After his training, Schönian followed his own path, developing a preference for portraying animals, poultry in particular. Schönian was also active as an illustrator, and his work became more widely known through magazine and book inclusion.
