The artistically very gifted Ali Pott, wife of George Martens, was the only female artist among the Groningen Ploeg members. She has been participating in the Ploeg exhibitions since 1919, mainly with figures, portraits and still lifes. Her work was almost immediately positively reviewed by critics for its highly idiosyncratic character and appealing use of color. Indeed, in terms of stylization and colour, her work is more related to that of the foreign expressionist-symbolist avant-garde than to De Ploeg. Like most other Ploeg members, Ali Pott was a versatile artist: she painted in oils and pastels, drew, made collages, designed posters as well as wooden pendants and brooches which she painted with a constructivist pattern. Her watercolours were best known. Because she died young, her oeuvre is small and rare.
