Andrew Murray was born in China to an English missionary couple. His grandfather James Murray was publisher of the famous Oxford English Dictionary. In his youth, Murray returned to England, where he studied history at Oxford. He became a teacher and in 1939 enlisted in the Royal Navy as a telegraph operator. In 1946 Murray moved to South Africa; here he was editor-in-chief of The Southern Cross, a Catholic daily, in the 1950s. At that time Murray started painting, and after a few years opened his own gallery. Murray's naive depictions proved popular and were also used for reproduction on cards, calendars and posters. In 1969 he returned to Great Britain, where his work enjoyed great popularity.
