The city of Amsterdam has always been loved by artists. In the early 19th century, our capital was the center of the romantic cityscape. The romantic painters were devoted to the beautiful buildings and picturesque canals. Later the Amsterdam impressionists mainly showed the dynamics of the city in their works. For Anthonie Pieter Schotel, he had a great preference for capturing river and seascapes. It is mainly delicate, gray tones that he uses in his water faces. He painted Leidseplein around 1950. He does this at a place at the top of the nightclub 'Extase' and shows the Amsterdam world through a sunny mist veil.
