The French realist Antoine Vollon was admired during his lifetime for his still lifes. Born into a family of artistic craftsmen, he trained as an engraver and decorator. In the meantime he also started to paint. Determined to make it his profession, he moved to Paris in 1859. There he took lessons with Théodule Ribot and found inspiration in the work of the Dutch 17th-century still life painters. Vollon was very successful and won many medals at the Salon in Paris with his still lifes. It is less known that he also painted landscapes and seascapes.
