Anton Weinberger received his painting training at the Munich Academy and then apprenticed with the then famous German animal and genre painter Paul Meyerheim in Berlin. Following this teacher, he then devoted himself to painting animals, including domestic animals such as dogs and cats, as well as hunting dogs and game in their natural environment. This animal genre was extremely popular in the 19th century and, following England, almost all countries in Western Europe had their own specialized animal painters. Weinberger also painted dog portraits at the Vienna Court for some time.
