Antoni Piotrowski received a thorough education in his native Poland from Wojciech Gerson and Jan Matejko. He painted and drew realistic landscapes, hunting groups, genre scenes and portraits. In addition, from 1879 he worked in Bulgaria as a correspondent for a number of foreign newspapers. Journalism then took Piotrowski to Paris, where he lived and worked until the outbreak of the Serbian-Bulgarian War in 1885. His voluntary participation in the front was a turning point in his oeuvre. The everyday reality of soldier's life became a new and attractive subject for the artist.
