Armin Glatter was a much-loved painter in Hungary at the beginning of the 20th century. He owed his popularity to his finely detailed, realistic and later colourful portraits, female figures and genre scenes, which were highly appreciated by the wealthy bourgeoisie. The painter was born in Slovakia but from 1886 attended the Munich Academy, which delivered famous genre painters. In particular, Gabriel von Hackl's figure painting class was decisive for Glatter's artistic development. After his studies, the artist undertook trips to France, Russia and Italy, after which he settled permanently in Budapest.
