Provenance: Kunsthandel Bennewitz, Den Haag.

Very few romantic landscapes are known of Ary Johannes Lamme. The painter was born in Dordrecht into an artistic family: he received his first painting lessons from his father. In 1829 he left for Paris to continue his studies in the studio of his uncle Ary Scheffer. Following the example of this master, he would prefer to paint genre pieces and subjects from Dutch history. In addition to being an artist, Ary Lamme was also a successful art dealer and in 1852 he became director of the Boijmans Museum in Rotterdam, which had just opened. In 1869 Lamme acquired the Dalhof estate in Berg en Dal, where he retired from 1870 to paint.
