Koekkoek's 17th-century predecessor, Jacob van Ruisdael, painted no fewer than 30 views of Haarlem from the dunes. Koekkoek's painting features the same low horizon, drawing all attention to the impressive cloudy sky. The painting was for sale in 1916 at Kunsthandel C.M. van Gogh, 'Uncle Cor's shop,' as Vincent called it in his letters.
