Bernard Schultze was one of the pioneers of post-war German Informal Abstract painting, a movement that emerged in reaction to geometric abstraction and is characterized by the abandonment of rational approaches, preconceived plans, or ideals of beauty. It was about the process, physical involvement, and the direct translation of the artist's energy via the paintbrush into the artwork, which often began with a drop or splatter and a wild sweep across the canvas. In addition to his lyrical abstract paintings, from 1961 onwards Schultze developed object-like beings with onomatopoeic properties, which he gave the name 'Migofs'. Schultze's main themes were strong colours, large formats, and dynamic compositions, with his later works often evoking memories of landscapes and plants.
