Karl Jutz made his name principally as a painter of landscapes featuring poultry and birds. He attended the art academy in Munich and subsequently that in Düsseldorf, renowned in the nineteenth century and where Gustav Süs was a major influence on his artistic development. Jutz was one of the few animal painters in Düsseldorf, mainly specialising in fowl, and had duck and chicken coops built in his garden in order to study them at length. Inspired by popular genre paintings, he also produced pictures that parodied contemporary society. This, and his loose, fluid brushstrokes and use of colours made Jutz's work very popular with buyers.
