Carl Schlüter, born in Amsterdam, decided at a later age to make painting his profession. He attended the academy in Amsterdam and moved to the Gooi in 1921. In Amsterdam one of his teachers had been Nicolaas van der Waay, whose refined and tonal impressionism resonates in much of Schlüter's work. He found his inspiration in the nature around Laren and Blaricum: flowering orchards, cornfields, farmers, but he also painted still lifes and Amsterdam cityscapes.
