Belgian painter, engraver and etcher, working in the Romantic period. The oeuvre of Charles Hagenbeek includes portraits, figure pieces, genre scenes, landscapes and depictions with animals. The artist traveled to Italy one or more times. Traveling (foreign) was even considered an essential part of the cultural development of painters, sculptors, writers, poets and art lovers. Romanticism was the heyday of the so-called voyages pittoresques, in which finding the ideal landscape was the main purpose of travel.
