Charles Ludwig Stricker preferred to paint impressions of the flat, Dutch landscape around his hometown of Amsterdam, later Haarlem. In addition, his oeuvre includes several beach views. The artist practiced painting in his spare time, in addition to a position as authorized representative of a company in masonry materials. He probably painted this landscape in Nieuwer-Amstel (now Amstelveen) in 1918. A year later the old Koenenmolen went up in flames and was never rebuilt.
