The French painter Charles Réal has a thematically very diverse oeuvre to his name. He painted genre scenes, such as this brothel scene, but also landscapes, urban scenes and sea, beach and river views. Real regularly exhibited his work at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, of which he was also a fellow member.
