The American artist Clarence Underwood was a famous illustrator of magazines such as Harpers, the Saturday Evening Post and Ladies World Magazine. He was educated at the Art Students League in New York and then moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian (1896). At the turn of the century, he returned to New York. There he became a successful designer of illustrations for magazines, covers, books, postcards and advertisements. His illustrations are usually romantically charged depictions of beautiful young women and their enamored husbands. During World War II, he also used his talent for the Preparedness Movement and propaganda for the War Department and the Red Cross.
