Constant Troyon is one of the most famous painters of the French Barbizon School. He is best known for his depictions of cattle, cows in particular, in the landscape. He started as a decorative painter in the famous Manufacture de porcelaines in his native village Sèvres, where he was playfully trained as a painter. His first landscapes date from 1830. At that time he became acquainted with Barbizon painters who worked directly from nature in the forests of Fontainebleau: among others Theodore Rousseau, Paul Huet and Jules Dupré. A trip to Belgium and the Netherlands in 1847 was crucial for the further development of his career. Here he got to know the work of Albert Cuyp and Paulus Potter and he got the desire to breathe new life into this tradition of cattle painting. Troyon established his name at home and abroad with his cattle pieces, exhibited in many countries and received numerous awards. His work is executed with apparent ease, very vividly and realistically painted, with great harmony in tone.
