In the nineteenth century, the Netherlands was home to a number of well-known equine painters. One of them was C.A.J. Schermer, whose oeuvre spans a wide variety of themes. It includes the somewhat traditional stable interiors and ploughing horses, but also comprises elegant hunting parties, stage coaches and horse races. For the best part of his life Schermer lived and worked in The Hague, where he was educated at the art academy.
