The impressionist Cornelis de Bruin lived and worked in Amsterdam, with many interruptions. For a number of years he attended the evening classes of the Rijksacademie, where at that time August Allebé held sway. After that, he devotes himself to painting landscapes, cityscapes, wetlands such as the Gooi and Vecht region and sea and beach. In addition to painting, he developed as a pottery painter and ceramist, with which he made a name for himself and was able to provide for himself. From the 1920s onwards, he also made small sculptures and monumental, expressionist architectural sculptures.
