Provenance: kunsthandel Arthur Tooth & Sons, Londen.
The Hague School painter D.A.C. Artz was already famous in his time for his beautiful, sensitively painted representations of fisherman's life in Scheveningen. In his choice for this genre he was strongly influenced by Jozef Israels, with whom he had made friends as a young painter. In stylistic terms, however, he was not a follower of Israels. His way of painting is less atmospheric, much sharper in drawing and much more precise in detailing.
