Désiré de Keghel was a well-known Ghent painter of romantic flower still lifes. His brother Jules and niece Alice also specialized in this genre. In the second half of the 19th century, Ghent was the Belgian city with the most still life painters. The reason for this may have been the many horticultural exhibitions and competitions that were held there. Painters had easy access to the lavish displays of special varieties of roses and chrysanthemums.
