Dick Ket is best known as a painter of carefully painted still lifes and portraits. They were created after 1930 when the effects of a heart condition forced him to retire to his studio. Before that, from 1919 onwards he was an exuberant painter who spontaneously brought his impressions onto the canvas in rapid movements. He mainly made landscapes and cityscapes and painted a lot outside. Perhaps because he did not always have a suitable subject available, Dick Ket painted a relatively large number of self-portraits. He is not lenient with himself. A number of very expressive self-portraits of his are known, especially from the period from 1924 to 1930.
