Dirk Filarski, together with Arnout Colnot, is considered one of the founders of the Bergen School. He mainly painted landscapes. In the Netherlands, he was particularly fascinated by the landscape around Bergen and Giethoorn. Filarski initially used light colours, but after 1910 his palette changed to browns and greens and his work became powerful and expressionistic. He also painted still lifes and flowers, large in shades of grey and brightly contrasting colours. In addition, from 1911 onwards he made many trips through Europe and North Africa. In 1912 he visited Switzerland for the first time, where the sister of his friend Dirk Smorenberg lived. There he was particularly fascinated by the mountain landscape, which he initially depicted in the atmosphere of Amsterdam Luminism and later in bright, expressionistic colours.
