Douwe Komter was one of the painters who settled in the Gooi around the turn of the century. There he painted landscapes and peasant interiors in a broad, impressionistic touch. After 1930 he devoted himself entirely to painting still lifes. These are characterized by a hushed, intense attention to the beauty of the object and restrained colours, ranging from brown to grey-green and blue, the background slightly pointed.
