Elsa Woutersen van Doesburgh painted figures, portraits, still lifes and the courtyards of Haarlem, where she later lived, in a smooth, impressionistic style. She became best known to the general public for her miniature portraits and illustrations for magazines. From 1892 to 1899, Elsa attended the ladies' class of the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, at the same time as the Amsterdam Joffers. She then took lessons with one of them, Coba Ritsema. She was a member of 'Arti et Amicitiae' in Amsterdam and of 'Kunst Zij ons Doel' and the artist group 'De Spaak' in Haarlem.
