The painter Emil Brehmer was born in 1822 in the East German town of Kurtsch, a town that now lies in Poland and is now called Kurczówa. He received his education at the academy of Breslau (now Wroclaw). Afterwards, he studied with the Berlin portrait painter Franz Friedrich Keil and then with the portrait painter Ernst Resch in Breslau. Portraits became a Brehmer specialty, alongside (kitchen) still lifes, which he compiled with great precision and a phenomenal sense of color and composition. His work hangs in the City Museum of Wrocklaw.
